PLAY, LEARN, AND EMPOWER

Kimberly Sopher-Dunn, M.Ed. founded the Play, Learn, and Empower program as Saturday Morning Experience for families within the Skyway/West Hill and Renton Communities. The Play, Learn, and Empower program embodies teaching parents about how to recognize playful learning experiences.

If your agency is seeking curriculum development on how to align everyday learning experiences for children Birth to 8 years old with WAKids and Teaching Strategies Gold please contact Kimberly: [email protected].

Art Provocations with Squash
Retrieved from: lhttp://thebarefootdiary.com/preschool-provocations/

Art Provocations provoke! Thoughts, discussions, questions, interests, creativity, ideas. They also work to expand on an existing learning project. Art Provocations provide invitations to explore and self express. The learning process, tools, and tasks offered are often left open ended. Art Provocations are meant to be beautiful, wonderful, novel, and inspirational!

Think: Something that makes a child’s eyes wide with awe.

  • They should be pleasing to at least one of the senses!
  • Art Provocations should stimulate a child to react by engaging in something deeply. That is, through thinking about something a new way, trying something different, feeling a new emotion, seeing something from a new angle, caring about something that has never before been relevant to them, or investing his mind to create something innovative.

What you will need to prepare for Saturday's Class on October 10th

  • Squash (you can choose any type. If you don’t have squash then choose any type of vegetable)
  • A bowl or container for the squash
  • Orange , green, and/or yellow paint
  • Paint brush
  • Paper
  • Tape
  • Table and Chair

Babies and Toddlers....

Set up finger paints. Finger paints are a great way for your toddler to explore creativity, color, and art without having to hold a marker or crayon. They can learn to make dots, squiggles, and lines with their fingers and then transition these skills to using a paintbrush. Here is a great link to make edible finger paint with yogurt. What's appropriate for each age range

No two children are the same, and as parents you know if your child is comfortable using paintbrushes. Also, may I suggest that you are guiding your child through this process by sitting down with your child to support him/her with their Art Provocation project. Asking your child questions about their process. If you have children with multiple age ranges this is a great project for children ages 3 to 10 years old (and maybe older)!
